A Blast From the Past – ATARI is Back!

Question – How do you play an Atari 2600 on your new 4K HDTV with HDMI? Answer – Who cares! You can buy an Atari Flashback 7 for all your nostalgic gaming shenanigans.

While appearance wise the Atari Flashback 7 is no substitute for the original machine with the lovely wood panels, this is a pretty good substitute without faffing around with a 3+ year old machine.

There are no end of retro-themed products available this year: they the Atari Flashback Portable, Sega Genesis Classic Game Console, Sega Genesis Ultimate Portable Game Player, and Atari Flashback 7 .

The Atari Flashback 7 for this year adds to the previous Flashback 6‘s 100 game total with the very welcome addition of Frogger!!

The Flashback 7 console is tiny and is very light. It uses dual-core custom chips to accelerate the real-time software emulation. The consoles style resembles the iconic version of the 2600 but it is not an exact replica.

The Atari Flashback 7 is a superb emulator and we love the option to use wired joysticks or paddles. The original Atari 2600 (then called the VCS (Video Computer System) was released in 1977 and sold 30 million units up to 1982. The retail price back then was $199 which by today’s terms would be around $800! The Atari was the system that launched the gaming industry and Atari brought arcade style games to the homes of everyday folks.

Atari’s classic design has been honored and it comes with two wireless battery operated controllers or you have the option of plugging in your own compatible controllers or paddles (for total nostalgia).

The Flashback 7 is a great way to get a bunch of games in one hit, 101 to be exact. Of course it would be great to have HDMI output and Bluetooth controllers but if it did, it would be double the price.

The original consoles are very difficult to find now and can be very pricey. If it goes wrong, you could be up that well known creek as who will repair it?

Atari have also released a Flashback 7 Portable which is a handheld version with a 3.2” LCD display, 60 built in games, and a Micro SD slot so you can download more games online.

Our favorite game at the moment is Frogger. The colors are rich, the graphics are smooth and it looks very much like the original arcade version. Atari have done a fine job with emulating the original sounds.

The Flashback 7 also comes with game classics such as Asteroids, Breakout, Missile Command, and a horde of other simple gaming legends. Most of the games are easy to learn but if you can’t work them out, you can visit a site like AtariAge or do a Google search to find the manuals for some of these games.
